Kensington Home Receives Chrysalis Award
for Home Remodel
Marrokal Construction, received a western regional Chrysalis
Award in the Kitchen Remodel $40,000-$75,000 category for a
home renovation in the historic
San Diego
neighborhood of Kensington at the home of Dan Larson and Nick
Weitzel.
The kitchen remodel was one aspect of the whole house
renovation of a 1940s post-war wood frame home. The design
concept was to create a
Hollywood
bungalow feel while uniting the kitchen, dining and living
areas without destroying the integrity of the home’s
architecture.
The
remodel included reconfiguring the wall between the kitchen and
dining areas in order to replicate the distinctive arches
initially designed into the home’s structure. In addition, the
restoration of the kitchen included custom dark umber-stained
alder cabinetry, white tiger granite with a beveled edge, a
custom designed dark umber wood banquette, high-end stainless
appliances complete with six burner gas range and built-in wine
cooler, and large 20 inch square porcelain tile laid diagonally
on the floor. The result is a kitchen that blends updated
amenities with the bungalow
ambiance.
Marrokal
also received three other regional Chrysalis awards in the Bath
Remodel $40,000-$60,000 category, Addition Under $100,000
category and Western Remodeler of the Year category. This is
the fourth year in a row that Marrokal has received at least
one Chrysalis Award.
Marrokal received
the Chrysalis Award in the Bath Remodel $40,000- $60,000
category for the remodel of a master bath in the Scripps
Ranch
neighborhood of
San Diego
at the home of Brian and Helen
Smith.
The master
bath remodel was part of an elaborate all-inclusive, whole
house remodel of a circa 1970s tract home. The design concept
was to create a large, well-lit and functional area in contrast
to the previously dark and cramped
space.
Marrokal received
the Chrysalis Award in the Addition Under $100,000 category for
the master bedroom and adjoining wall patio of Craig &
Terri Georgi’s home
in
Poway
. The addition was the third phase of a continuing
home
remodel.
Since 1993, the Chrysalis Awards recognize the nation’s best
remodeling work in over 30 categories in four regional
competitions that encompass the entire
U.S.
The awards are judged by
editors and writers of consumer publications such as Better
Homes & Gardens, Woman’s Day’s Home Remodeling &
Makeovers, Southern Living Magazine and Sunset Magazine. The
projects are judged on design, use of materials, use of space
and integration into the existing
space
