ASK THE TECK

 By:  Joe Di Maio

Jim M.  Does it matter if my check engine light is on, my car still runs fine?

Answer, yes the light is on to tell you something is now or will be an issue soon. The light is telling you to take the car in and find out what is wrong, even thou the car may seem fine it will affect gas mileage and your emissions.

Paula M. I took my car in for a free check engine light inspection and they told me the code numbers then said it would be 150.00 to continue on with the diagnosis. I feel like I am being ripped off. What should I do?

Answer. There is not any free check engine light service this is a way for companies to get you in then charge you for additional work they call bait and switch. If a company tells you they do not charge for diagnostic checks. Well your question gave you the answer nothing is free.

Peter T. can’t I buy one of those 30.00 scan tools from an auto parts store to check my engine light.

Answer. Yes but all those things do is point you in the right direction you still need to check each code individually to see if the code is a true code or a false code. Go to a professional it will save you time and money in the long run
