Little
Race for Little People
Saturday, August
16th, was the 17h Annual wet 'n wild "Little Race for Little
People". This year's event, hosted by the Chula Vista Yacht
Club at the California Yacht Marina in Chula Vista, was big,
wet, and wonderful. All funds raised were directly donated
to the Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at San Diego's
Children's Hospital.
During the event
filled morning, Chula Vista Harbor was quite active. Chula
Vista Fire Department & the SD Harbor Police both showed
their community spirit, providing water for the start and
finish lines.
Racing teams tried
to sink the other competitor’s rubber inflatable boats using
anything handy including old cut up milk cartons, “Last year
we had trash can lids” Joked one volunteer.
A “Pacifico” Beer blessing priest officiated and
a pair of clowns entertained the gathering crowd.
Everything was followed by a BBQ lunch, silent auction,
and local band Tradewinds playing light tunes for
guests.
The race is arduous.
Leg 1 is a row to windward, Leg 2 a row backwards up the
course, Leg 3 a row with the boat forward and the crew
backward and the final leg 4 a "sail" home with the "MYSTERY
RULE" in place. The Prizes are as strange as the race.
The first Little
Race for Little People raised nearly $2,700 for the infant
special care unit. Over the years, this event has raised
over $500,000 for children. The growth reflected in its
phenomenal success is a direct result of the dedication and
tireless commitment of volunteers and the vision of its
founder, Greg Anderson.
